    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pay for therapy?

There are two options for paying for therapy. You can self-pay or use your insurance.

    Self-Pay

If you decide to pay for therapy on your own, we offer a discount for our services. The self-pay discounted rate is $140 per 50 minute session (our standard rate is $175 per 50 minute session). Each of our therapists offer a sliding scale option that starts at $100 per 50 minute session. If you wish to be considered for a sliding scale rate, you should indicate that as soon as you reach out to us.

    Insurance

If you would like to use your insurance, we must first determine if we are in network with your plan. We are currently in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) and Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI). If you are not covered by one of these plans, you may still be able to use your insurance on an out-of-network basis. This would mean you pay for services up front, and your insurance company reimburses you directly. Our staff will provide you with something called a Super Bill – this is a document that the insurance companies need to process your claim. You should call your insurance company directly to determine if you have out of network coverage, and if it will cover our services. Do I have to have trauma to be seen by one of your therapists?

The short answer to this is no. Our therapists are trained in working with many different concerns and may be a great fit for you, even if you do not identify as a trauma survivor. That being said, we all come from a trauma-informed perspective and have a very broad view of what constitutes a traumatic experience. Most of us will experience something traumatic in our lives, and this perspective can be helpful even if you are not specifically looking for a trauma therapist.

What types of therapy do you provide?

Our therapists have all been trained in many different approaches to counseling. As trauma specialists, we have extensive training and experience in approaches that are evidence-based and have proven to be effective in reducing or eliminating the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Currently our most utilized approaches are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

How often will we meet and for how long?

Most of our clients come in weekly for 50 minutes. Some clients prefer twice weekly sessions, while others meet twice monthly. Your treatment plan and goals set with your therapist will determine session frequency. We typically recommend coming in at least twice a month in the early stages of therapy as we are building a relationship and working toward your goals. As time goes on and you start to see progress, you may decide to come in less often. You and your therapist should have open communication about your treatment plan and determine what is best for you throughout the process.

How many sessions will it take for me to see results?

Every individual is different, and treatment length will vary depending on your history and symptoms. We will co-create a treatment plan based on your goals for therapy with the intention of alleviating your symptoms as quickly as possible. Some individuals may only need a few sessions of therapy to reach their goals, while others will stay in therapy for several years.

How is therapy different from confiding in a friend?

There is a common misconception that therapy is just about talking or venting about your problems. Our approach to therapy is based on an understanding of brain science and human behavior. We will use a variety of tools to help you change patterns that are no longer serving you.

Can I bring someone with me to therapy?

It is common for people to seek individual therapy due to interpersonal conflicts. Whether you are experiencing issues in a romantic relationship, familial conflict, or difficulty with a friend, therapy can be a helpful intervention. During our initial sessions we will meet one-on-one to assess the nature of the issue and determine if joint sessions would be appropriate and/or useful. Based on this assessment, we may schedule a session or series of sessions with your loved one to address these interpersonal issues directly.

Some of our therapists are also trained in providing couples and/or family therapy, which is a specific type of therapy. If you are interested in this service, please be sure to indicate that when you reach out so we can get you connected with the best person.

Do you provide in-person or telehealth services?

We offer both! Some of our clients prefer to always be seen in person, while others prefer only to attend sessions virtually. Most do some combination of the two. When you schedule your first session please let us know how you would like to attend your initial intake and we will accommodate your preference.

Where are you located and what should I expect when I arrive for my first appointment?

Our center is located at 1516 South 1100 East, Unit A (which is the lower/basement unit) in Salt Lake City. You will park on 1100 East just outside of our east entrance.

When you arrive, you will enter into our waiting room. Take a seat and your therapist will come out to greet you shortly. Keep in mind that they may be wrapping up a session when you arrive, so feel free to grab a beverage or use the restroom, which is directly to the west of the waiting room.

How will I connect if I am meeting with my therapist virtually?

We use a therapy software called Simple Practice for all of our practice data, including our virtual sessions. You should receive a link for your virtual session 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time. This will be emailed to whatever email address you provide us. If you do not see it, please check your spam folder as sometimes it gets caught in the filter. If you still cannot find it, text our office at 435-287-4197 or email your provider.

Do I need to bring anything with me to my first appointment?

Prior to your appointment, you should complete all of the necessary forms online. You will receive an email requesting that you complete this as soon as your appointment is confirmed. These forms include:

    • Standard Intake Questionnaire – this form helps us collect a bit of information about why you are seeking therapy and how we can support you.
    • Notice of Privacy Practices – this form provides more information about the policies and practices we use to protect your privacy.
    • Informed Consent for Psychotherapy – this form gives you more info about what to expect in therapy.
    • Practice Policies – this form tells you more about our general policies
    • Demographics form – this form helps us collect necessary information about you, like your name, address, and date of birth
    • Credit card information – all clients are required to have a credit card on file with us. We will charge this card for any fees associated with your services (insurance co-pays, no show fees, etc.)
    • Consent for Telehealth Consultation – in the event that you ever decide to do a virtual session, we need this form signed; we have all new clients sign it so that we always have the option for virtual visit in the future.

How can I access information about my billing, scheduling, etc.?

You will use our client portal to access any information related to your services. You will receive an invitation to the client portal when you initiate services. The client portal can be accessed here: https://ucptg.clientsecure.me. If you cannot locate your email invitation to set up your client portal access, please contact us at info@ucptg.com and we will generate a one time pin for you to use to login. You can also ask your therapist to generate this pin for you.
